Working in an emergency is not only busy but also very dangerous. Many people come in to be treated for what ever their ailment of the day but we don't know their true history. One of the emergency rooms I work at ,has started a workplace violence task force meeting every month. From that task force many things have happened all for the better. The one I would like to write about is the security team. The task force put a security guard in the ED on fri,sat and Sunday from 4pm-12 midnight. It was great, our security guards have not been professionally trained but they will protect the staff and the patients and they did a great job with it. Every monday a letter went to their boss telling him how great they were. Security was able to intervene so many times truely keeping the staff and patients safe. Well out of the blue they no longer are assigned to the ED they can walk thru the ED but there isn't the man power for him to stay. The problem is no one was aware of it! Makes you wonder what really goes on in management.

nurses are getting hurt by the patients they take care of

At times I wonder if there is only a few people that get upset over violence in the workplace. Another nurse kicked in the face ,another punched in the face and no consequences the the patients doing it! Why is that?

court day

I was very nervous about going to court. I thought to myself, did she really hit that hard? was the fat lip so bad? Those thoughts lasted for a short time then, I said to myself pull yourself together, are you crazy! why would you allow someone to hurt you when you are helping them! So I went to court only to find her sitting on the same bench I would be sitting on and she had a cane this time ,I wondered would she hit me with the cane??? We went before the court magistrate and she needs to return to court next month because she will be charged with assault and battery. I am glad I did this because next time she needs someones help she will think twice before she hits anyone.

courage to file police reports

It takes courage to file a police report. However when enough is enough, I believe you do what you have to. How long is enough to get abused? Well I won't stand to be abused any more. I filed a police report when someone hit me. The police came to the hospital, took the report and I felt good. Instead of complaining I did something, A few days later the detectives came into the hospital and showed me a pictured ? a mug shot?? It was her ,the person that assaulted me. I was able to indentify her. In about 2-3 weeks I received a letter for a hearing with the court magistate.

July 3,2009 4 healthcare workers injured

Can you imagine doing your job and having someone spit at you? how about having someone take a few layers of skin off your arm with their filthy fingernails or maybe someone slap you but decided that wasn't enough and the backhanded you giving you a fat lip. have urine thrown at you!
Does anyone have this happen at their job? We do ,we are nurses ,medical assistants and security guards. I want to explain these injuries ,are not from the elderly patient, the person with low Bld sugar or a psychotic patient. The people I am writing about are people that are upset the wait is to long, they didn't get what they wanted, they weren't fed. The examples are really to long to list. If the patient dosen't abuse us the family might.
Can anyone answer why a person would hurt someone when their job is to help them????

new bill numbers

THE SENATE BILL #1753
THE HOUSE BILL # 1696

We the healthcare workers workers in the state of MA are waiting for these bills to be passed so it would be a felony to hit a healthcare worker! Why does it take so long?
